"19th Amendment In Iowa" Banners on display in the Courthouse through August 31

Posted on Tuesday July 14, 2020

Decatur County, in partnership with the Iowa Secretary of State's Office, is commemorating the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 was a monumental achievement in our nation’s history - one that merits attention, education, and promotion throughout the state of Iowa. Among the thousands of Iowa women and men who tirelessly advocated for suffrage in the decades prior, one Iowan is perhaps best known: Carrie Chapman Catt. At the peak of the women’s suffrage movement, Catt was one of the most well-known women in the country. Catt’s pragmatic approach led to the creation of the “Winning Plan” in 1916, which gained support for a suffrage amendment. Catt strategized alongside Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and she also founded the nationally renowned League of Women Voters organization.

In 2020, numerous commemorative projects will take place throughout Iowa with an emphasis on education activities and promotional events highlighting the role of the past in shaping Iowa’s future.

At the local level, County Auditors have been provided a set of educational, retractable banners illustrating the 19th Amendment from an Iowan perspective. Local organizations, such as rotary clubs and civic groups, public libraries, and school districts can borrow the banners to display and heighten awareness on the history of women’s suffrage.

After Iowa became the tenth state to ratify the amendment, it took 413 days and 26 more states to commission the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On August 18, 2020, our nation formally commemorates this centennial anniversary.

To reserve the banners, with optional accompanying PowerPoint presentations, for your local event, contact the Decatur County Auditor’s Office by phone at 641/446-4323 or via e-mail at dauaud@grm.net.   When not in use for local events and through August 31, the banners will be on display on the first floor of the Decatur County Courthouse.
